Job Description

Title: Mechatronics Technician

Location: Bartlett, IL

Hire Type:  CONTRACT-TO-HIRE  $28-$37 dependant on experience 


Job Summary: 
Capable of assisting multiple engineering project teams of large, custom, automation projects, from Proof of Principle to installation. Responsibilities include the understanding a project specification, and design intent, both mechanically and electrically, enabling support during the engineering, build and commissioning phase of projects.  Additional responsibilities include system commissioning and debug of custom automation equipment.   The role will directly interface with the Project Manager and all project leads.  Has decision-making responsibility for issues related to fabrication, assembly, debug, and qualification of the machine. 
 

Job Duties: 
  1. Understands design layouts, schematics, and bills of materials to be used in producing custom machinery
  • Understands cam, servo, and air operated mechanisms, and able to improve upon existing designs.
  • Ensure the design is functional, robust, and cost effective.
  • Understands timing diagrams and selected sensor application.
  • Understands electrical wiring schematics, flow diagrams, panel layouts, Bill of Materials.
    1. Proficient in use of hand tools, soldering irons, mechanical and electronic test & measurement equipment to verify product standards and optimal performance.
    2. Implement or test design solutions.
    3. Perform preliminary I/O debugging.
    4. Capable of debug and minor modifications to existing PLC and HMI programs.
    5. Audits engineering work for accuracy and completeness.
    6. Ability to power up and commission devices from start to finish without assistance of others.

    • Problem-solve design issues and update all appropriate documentation.

    1. Diagnoses cause of electrical or mechanical malfunction of operational equipment, and performs preventative and corrective maintenance
    2. Use knowledge of pneumatic functions, devices and fittings, to achieve desired results.
    3. Adjust cam timing, rotary positions (i.e. indexing units) as necessary.
    4. Perform in-house acceptance run-off.
    5. Maintain technical project files.
    6. Plan, support and document Proof of Principle experiments 
    7. Research, select, or apply new technology or OEM features or equipment
    8. Interface with customer when necessary.
    9. Install and service machines at customer’s site as required.
    10. Train customer’s personnel on machine operations and maintenance.

    1. Offers mentoring to new employees or team members.
    2. Good knowledge of machine qualification methods; knowledge of SPC a plus.

    • Writes specifications & acceptance criteria for large custom components (Key Items)

    1. Program simple control systems for cam, servo, and air operated stations, along with test and commissioning of electrical devices.

    • Work under the confines of the project schedule and budget.

    1. Record changes to machine parts and assemblies on engineering drawings following our current Red line process.
    2. Support and participate in Quality Management Program.

    • Follow all policy and procedures to maintain ISO13485 Certification requirements.

    1. Provide necessary documentation and support for machinery Operating Manuals. 
    2. Travel or extend work day if required.

    1. Report any unsafe conditions or unsafe acts.
    2. Report any defect in any equipment or protective device.
    3. Ensure that the required protective equipment is used for the assigned task.
    4. Attend all required Health, Safety, and Environmental training.
    5. Report any accidents/incidents, including near misses to your supervisor.
    6. Assist in investigating any accidents/incidents or near misses if requested.
    7. Refrain from engaging in any unruly conduct.
    8. Ensure that employees are working in accordance with divisional health and safety procedures.
    9. Provide appropriate instruction for safe work.
    10. Take every precaution reasonable in the circumstances for the protection of employees.
    11. Ensure that all employees, including temporary workers and contractors, adhere to safety requirements including the use of personal protective equipment.

Qualifications:   
Education: 
  1. A.S. degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Engineering Technology, or, with lesser education, must possess and demonstrate very high level of automation experience
  • Experience:
    1. 2 years’ experience minimum
    2. Fluent in the use of 3D CAD (SolidWorks); working knowledge of 2D AutoCAD is a plus
    3. Good computer skills (spreadsheet and word processing)
    4. Strong mechanical aptitude.
    5. Good interpersonal skills.
  • Equipment:
    1. Computers, including programs such as AutoCAD, Solid Works, Excel, Word,  Automation databases, etc.
    2. Inspection and measuring tools such as scales, calipers, micrometers, multi-meters, dB meters, etc.
    3. Hand tools such as a variety of wrenches, pliers, saws, power drills, etc.
    4. Machinery such as milling machine, surface grinders, lathe, etc.
    5. PLC Knowledge

    Physical Demands:
    1. The employee may be required to stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.
    2. Exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, and/or exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently. 
    3. Visual Acuity – Normal requirements for reading written instructions and computer screens
    4. Hearing Ability – Normal requirements for understanding verbal instructions. 
    5. Working Conditions – The employee is subject to a normal office environment with occasional exposure to high noise levels and/or physical hazards when visiting manufacturing floor.
