Location: Elmhurst, IL | Salary: Up to $150,000 + 10% Bonus

A fast-growing manufacturer of custom-engineered water chillers is seeking a Lead Controls Engineer to join their team in Elmhurst, IL. This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys balancing hands-on programming with team leadership.

What You’ll Do
As the Lead Controls Engineer, you’ll oversee a small team of Controls Engineers while still remaining hands-on with automation and control systems. This position splits responsibilities between PLC programming and production support/improvements.

Key Responsibilities:
PLC Controls Development (50%)
  • Develop and install machine programs using automation software and custom coding
  • Test systems for efficiency, safety, and reliability
  • Troubleshoot PLCs and system errors
  • Document programs, flowcharts, and processes for transition to production
  • Monitor and qualify new features
  • Maintain and upgrade control systems as needed
Production Engineering Support (50%)
  • Support manufacturing teams with troubleshooting and test procedures
  • Investigate and implement automation tools for production and testing
  • Optimize deployment processes
  • Identify areas for improvement across system integration and controls
What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Software Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of PLC programming experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a detail-oriented mindset
  • Leadership qualities—whether formal or informal—are highly valued
  • Experience working in custom machinery, chillers, or HVAC systems is a plus
