Sterling Engineering is partnering with a power plant that is seeking a highly experienced and results-oriented General Manager to lead the plant operations, drive performance, and foster strong relationships with key stakeholders.
 
Location: East Chicago, IN (near Harrah's Casino)
 
Hire Type: Direct Hire

Compensation: Target salary range of $200,000 to $225,000 annually, complemented by a significant bonus potential of 20-25%.
 
Job Summary:
  •  The General Manager will hold ultimate responsibility for the safe, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective operation of the facility.
  • This role involves providing strategic leadership, managing all plant operations and maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and contractual obligations, optimizing financial performance, and cultivating strong relationships with the host industrial customer.
  •  The General Manager will lead a high-performing team and drive continuous improvement initiatives across the facility.
  • This position requires the ability to be on call for emergencies and, on occasion, return to the plant at off-hours to provide leadership and support.
  • The role is open due to the planned retirement of the current General Manager.
  • Ensure continuous plant operation (24/7) and maximize energy generation outputs.
  • In the event of plant outages, direct efforts to restore service as quickly and efficiently as possible.
  • Implement lessons learned and best practices from the broader organization to enhance operational effectiveness and customer relationships.
  • Develop and lead a high-performance, disciplined, safe, accountable, focused, innovative, and achievement-oriented team that fosters positive customer interactions.
  • Continuously identify and implement improvements in facility processes to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Optimize overall facility performance, focusing on efficiency, availability, capacity factor, and the Profit & Loss statement.
  • Make and/or approve critical operating, business, engineering, and maintenance decisions to ensure plant operation aligns with contract terms and conditions, O&M agreements are effectively managed, and appropriate training and communication are in place.
  • Hold direct responsibility for managing costs through effective expenditure approval and budget oversight.
  • Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction and adherence to contractual obligations.
  • Effectively collaborate with host industrial customer representatives at all levels (executive, mid-management, and operations).
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of accounting, contract administration, procurement, and overall plant administrative functions.
  • Negotiate contracts for the sale or purchase of goods and services to optimize value.
  • Analyze and interpret operational data to diagnose and resolve issues, making sound and cost-effective judgments.
  • Clearly articulate risks and rewards, both verbally and in writing, when advising business unit leadership on financial impacts and operational decisions.
  • Maintain a basic understanding of mechanical principles and demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical or Electrical Engineering preferred).
  • Fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in industrial energy production or the power industry, including a minimum of ten (10) years in a management role.
  • Demonstrated understanding of steam power plant Operations & Maintenance (O&M), plant engineering principles, thermodynamics, contract management, industrial processes, plant performance optimization, boiler operations, and plant business functions.
  • Deep familiarity with the operation and maintenance of boilers, steam turbines, control systems, heat exchangers, pumps, valves, and water treatment systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of computer systems and applications (advanced Excel skills are required).
  • Understanding of necessary federal and state licenses and permits relevant to power generation facilities.
  • Must have (or be able to obtain) a valid driver's license and US citizenship.
