Field Service Engineer – Lansing, MI

Salary: $85,000 – $100,000 + Service Bonus (15% of base based on service hours)
Schedule: Full-time, Non-exempt / OT over 40 hours / Double-time over 58 hours
Travel: ~50% (primarily domestic, occasional trips to Mexico or Canada)

About the Role
We are a 90-year-old, family-owned manufacturer of precision metal polishing machines used in the automotive industry. Our machines produce components with tolerances smaller than a human hair, supporting camshafts, crankshafts, and other critical automotive parts for GM, Ford, Stellantis, and other OEMs.

We’re looking for a Field Service Engineer who enjoys working in a small, collaborative environment, wearing multiple hats, taking initiative, and making a direct impact. You’ll split your time between in-house support and field service, troubleshooting complex machines, commissioning new equipment, and training customer teams.

This is a hands-on role with a calm work environment, building only 8 machines per year. Typical work weeks are 40–45 hours, with occasional peaks to 50–60 hours during high-demand periods.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with internal Mechanical and Controls Engineers during machine builds
  • Travel to customer sites to install, commission, and run-off machines (pre-planned schedule)
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and controls issues
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and upgrades on equipment in the field
  • Train customer operators and maintenance personnel on machine operation and troubleshooting
  • Provide feedback to engineering teams on machine performance and improvements
  • Support in-house debugging, testing, and commissioning of machines
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical training
  • 3+ years of hands-on field service experience with industrial machinery, machine tools, or automation equipment
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and controls systems
  • Proficient in reading schematics, blueprints, and technical drawings
  • Experience with PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Fanuc) and HMI interfaces; CNC programming experience a plus
  • Automotive powertrain or precision manufacturing experience highly desirable
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and customer-facing communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license and passport (or ability to obtain)
Why You’ll Love This Role
  • Work for a stable, family-owned company with a 90-year history
  • Collaborative, small-team environment with a calm pace
  • Opportunity to grow and develop your skills in a technically challenging role
  • Competitive salary with OT and a performance-based service bonus

Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
