Job Description
Summary:
Electrical Test Engineer is responsible for mechatronic system design, integration and technical support for our diverse customer base.
Responsibilities:
- Provides the sales team and customers with technical support on all electrical products (motors, drives, controllers, and Robot electrical systems);
- Becomes the Subject Matter Expert for servo drives and controls products and technologies. Assists and supports other engineers in solving complex servo system integration challenges;
- Tests new products developed at global headquarters including motors, drives and controllers;
- Assesses compatibility of 3rd party drives and controllers with electric motors. This includes testing, qualifying, and documenting such 3rd party products;
- Monitors conformity of motors, drives and controllers to North American electrical codes and standards (UL, CSA);
- Meets with customers to review product requirements, training, and troubleshooting on product design and function;
- Documents project information for the successful completion of each job. Maintains engineering files containing customer criteria and specifications, schematics, block diagrams, wiring documentation, etc.;
- Tests motors, drives and controllers to validate performance to customer specifications using instrumentation such as oscilloscopes and laser interferometers;
- Participates in product and project review meetings. Provides input pertaining to product design, system architecture and component selection;
- Attends product review meetings. Provides feedback pertaining to product design and electrical component selection;
- Assists in the training and development of engineers within the department.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Prior experience working with electrical testing equipment and instrumentation;
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills;
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Self-starter with ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and properly prioritize activities;
- Familiar with office automation tools: MS Office, ERP, CAD;
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE), MSEE desirable;
- 2+ years’ experience with motion control, automation, robotics, and mechatronics;
- At least 2 years electrical engineering experience in mechatronics, with specific experience with electric motors,
- servo drives and closed-loop motion control required;
- Strong knowledge of electric motors; specifically, AC servo, linear servo, torque, and stepper motors;
- Programming experience with motion controllers in contemporary programming languages (C++, C#, Python);
- Strong knowledge of feedback control systems & theory, servo tuning, and sizing;
- Good knowledge of multi-axis controllers and fieldbus protocols (ModBus, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, etc.).
- Ability to travel occasionally to customer sites to support system integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting. Travel as needed to support trade shows and industry events. Estimated up to 10% travel.
