Electrical Designer
Job Description
The Electrical Designer will be responsible for the design, development, and documentation of industrial control systems for custom automation equipment. The role involves creating electrical schematics, panel layouts, bill of materials, and wiring diagrams that comply with customer specifications, applicable codes, and best practices. The Electrical Designer will collaborate closely with the mechanical engineering, controls engineering, and machine build teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Design and develop electrical control panel layouts, schematics, and wiring diagrams using AutoCAD Electrical (or EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical depending on project needs).
- Select appropriate electrical components (PLCs, HMIs, drives, sensors, relays, power distribution, safety devices, etc.) based on system requirements.
- Develop detailed Bills of Materials (BOMs) and procurement documentation.
- Ensure designs meet applicable standards (UL508A, NFPA 79, NEC, CE, ISO, etc.).
- Work collaboratively with Controls Engineers to integrate hardware with software and control logic.
- Support the panel shop during panel build and machine wiring phases.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and system evaluations.
- Maintain accurate design documentation and revision control.
- Provide technical support for system debug, startup, and customer acceptance.
- Collaborate with vendors and suppliers to specify and source components.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related discipline preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in industrial electrical design for custom automation or capital equipment.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical; experience with EPLAN or SolidWorks Electrical is a plus.
- Familiarity with PLC hardware platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or Omron.
- Knowledge of industrial control components including HMIs, VFDs, motion controllers, sensors, and safety devices.
- Understanding of electrical standards such as UL508A, NFPA79, CE, NEC.
- Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and in a cross-functional team environment.
- Willingness to support equipment build, debug, and commissioning as needed.
- Exposure to vision systems, robotics, or motion control technologies.
- Experience working for a custom automation integrator or OEM.
- Familiarity with medical device or regulated industries.
