About the Opportunity:
Sterling Engineering is seeking a hands-on EH&S Manager to lead safety initiatives at a growing well-backed manufacturer in Orangeburg, SC. This site was recently acquired and is transitioning from a “mom-and-pop” environment to a standardized, large-company culture—making this a high-impact role for a strong safety leader.
This position oversees one direct report along with a dotted-line medic. The ideal candidate is someone who is passionate about building safety culture, driving regulatory compliance, and elevating EH&S standards in a manufacturing environment.
Job Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage all Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) programs for the Orangeburg facility.
- Ensure full regulatory compliance with federal, state, and local safety standards.
- Drive culture transformation as the facility shifts from small-company practices to corporate-standard processes.
- Oversee training and implementation of core programs (LOTO, JSA, Risk Assessments, Emergency Response, etc.)
- Conduct safety meetings, audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
- Coach, mentor, and develop site personnel on safety expectations.
- Manage the facility’s EHS budget, schedules, and performance requirements.
- Partner closely with supervisors, plant leadership, and corporate EH&S teams.
- Interface with the onsite medic (dotted-line report).
- Prepare and present EH&S metrics and technical documentation.
- Support continuous improvement and standardization across the site.
Qualifications:
- Manufacturing experience
- Strong background in Safety as the primary function
- Understanding of regulatory compliance
- Experience with hands-on safety programs (LOTO, JSA, Risk Assessments, etc.)
- Ability to influence culture and lead change
- Experience in food, automotive, or paper mill manufacturing
- Prior EHS leadership experience in a plant environment
- Experience transitioning facilities into a more structured corporate environment
- Knowledge of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 (environmental volume is minimal, but compliance familiarity is beneficial)
- Emergency medical certification and/or Hazmat certification (desired, not required)
Qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, age, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or genetic information.
