Title:  Construction Safety Specialist (Environmental Health and Safety - EHS)
Location: Irvine, CA 92612 onsite
Duration:  6-9+ months
Target Pay Range:  $45.00 - $55.00/hour (W2, with full employee benefits)
 
Sterling Engineering is looking for a dedicated Construction Safety Specialist to join the Research & Development Team and work alongside the EHS Manager. 
 
While being primarily office-based, you will interact with project engineers, general contractors, and subcontractors onsite at the Irvine campus construction projects is essential.  This is a full-time position, Monday to Friday, with standard hours of 8 AM–5 PM or 7 AM–4 PM. Overtime may be required depending on project deadlines and construction activities, with flexibility for weekend work as necessary to minimize disruption to site operations.
 
In this role you will: 
  • Serve as a focal point for construction and contractor safety,
  • Develop, implement, and manage safety protocols for engineering and construction projects across the Irvine location. 
  • Collaborate closely with local EHS and engineering teams. 
  • Coordinate external vendors for construction activities.
  • Assist in conducting job hazard analysis reviews.
  • Perform regular site inspections to ensure compliance and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Liaise with cross-functional groups including project engineers and general contractors.
  • Make informed safety decisions within project parameters.
  • Ensure adherence to local, state, and company EHS regulations.
  • Deliver safety training to contracted workforce.
  • Manage and track 3rd party construction/maintenance vendor compliance and EHS performance.
 Qualifications:
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in Health & Safety within the construction industry.
  • Proficiency in construction materials and practices.
  • Bachelor's degree in safety, occupational health, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • OSHA 30 Hour Certification required; 
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification a plus.
  • Strong understanding of high-risk activities such as electrical safety, excavation, confined spaces, fall protection, material handling, rigging, and crane operations.
  • Knowledgeable about California OSHA Construction Industry and General Industry regulations.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills within cross-functional teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, MS Teams).
  • Experience with contractor management systems/applications preferred.
