Job Summary

The Mechanical Design Engineer II - Custom is responsible for advanced design once the machine
has reached the Design stage; keeping intact the requirements as defined by the Concept Group and
the quality, cost, and delivery needs of the Customer.

 

Job Duties:
• Use internal standards, procedures, and company best practices to develop and execute
machine designs based on initial concept and customer specifications.
• Accountable to Team Leader for project & team success.
• Make suggestions to team leader to improve workflow.
• If assigned as rework point for project, ensure errors get back to the point of origin.
• Incorporate DFA (Design for Assembly) and DFM (Design for Manufacturability) strategies to
produce cost effective solutions taking into account the product lifecycle.
• Produce 3D solid models using SolidWorks. Use these models to produce detail drawings,
assembly drawings, bill of material, owner's manuals and checklists.
• Perform tolerance analysis on assemblies. (GD&T experience a plus).
• Fully understand and follow Standards and Procedures.
• Adhere to company policies and procedures.
Supervision:
• This position is at the team member level and does not supervise any staff.
Project Management & Scheduling:
• Strong time management skills. Ability to multi-task and have a strong sense of urgency.
• Effectively estimate time to complete assignment & inform Design Manager when target hours
will not be achievable.

Qualifications:
• B.S. degree in Mechanical Design Engineering or similar technology and 3-5+ years of
machine design experience.
• Basic knowledge with manufacturing processes needed to produce components (machining,
laser cutting, water jet, heat treating, plating/anodizing, etc.).
• Critical thinking and attention to detail.
• Exposure to LEAN and 6 Sigma concepts and tools. ISO experience a plus.
• Must have solid organizational skills.
Certification & Standards:
• Understand and apply pertinent regulatory and agency standards (OSHA, ANSI/PMMI, NFPA).

• Willingness to learn new skills and possessing a continuous improvement mindset. Ability to
learn from teammates and senior level staff.
• Exhibits mentoring potential.
• Communicates with the Team Leader areas of personal training that need support.
Software:
• Demonstrable proficiency in the use of MS Office, 3D Solid Modeling CAD and PDM software.
• SolidWorks and AutoCAD preferred.
Communication Skills:
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write reports, business
correspondence, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers
and other staff.
• Active listening skills.
Teamwork:
• Experience working in a team environment.
Travel:
• Limited travel up to 5% may be required.
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than 50% of the time.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals,
technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
• This position needs to occasionally move about the office and manufacturing floor.
• Constantly operates a computer and other office equipment.
• Requires frequent communication with teammates, staff, and customers.
• Must be able to read and interpret engineering drawings and 3D solid models.
Personal Protection Equipment (PPE):
• Safety glasses, Non-skid closed toe shoes.
